DISCOURSES OF EXHORTATION
TO THE MONKS OF EGYPT

Introductory Note

For this series of fifty Exhortations see DS iv (1960) col. 812. They were known to St Photios (Bibliotheca 196, PG 103:657-660). In Assemani they are in II/72f-186c. In their present form they are certainly not authentic. There is some internal evidence that they are Egyptian in origin. In the notes O = Thwaites’s edition (Oxford 1709), R = Assemani’s (Rome 1743) and T = Phrantzolas’ (Thessaloniki 1990).
